This Easy Chili is cozy, hearty, and guaranteed to hit the spot every time. Only 5 ingredients and 20 minutes stand between you and a bowl!

Easy chili recipe in bowl side view

Why you’ll love this chili

  • Easy. Only 5 ingredients and 20 minutes are necessary to make this recipe!
  • Versatile. This is a very basic chili, but mix-in up by using different meat, beans, adding spices, veggies, or even bacon.
  • Kid friendly. My kids absolutely devour this when it’s loaded up with cheese.
  • Meal prep-able. Make a double batch and freeze some for a rainy day.

Ingredients

This humble chili recipe is made with 5 ingredients, but feel free to play around with additional spices and ingredients (onion, garlic, bacon, etc.) if you want to kick it up a notch!

  • Ground Beef – use whatever ground beef you have on hand. If it’s higher in fat content, that’s ok, the additional grease will get drained off.
  • Beans – I like pinto beans for flavor and texture, but feel free to use any bean you have on hand like kidney beans, black beans, etc.
  • Condensed Tomato Soup – an easy way to create a chili base! This adds a nice, concentrated tomato flavor.
  • Brown Sugar – balances out the acidic tomatoes with a rich, molasses sweet flavor. Use more or less depending on how sweet you like your chili.
  • Chili Powder – made up of sweet paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, onion powder, oregano, and cumin; chili powder really gives that smoky, sweet, and spicy flavor we all know and love.
  • Salt – balances out the sweetness from the brown sugar and enhances the acidic tomato and rich ground beef.
Pro tip
This is a very easy, very basic, humble chili recipe, but this is what Trevor and I grew up eating in the Midwest. If you’re looking for a chili with a little more pizazz, be sure to check out my Easy Instant Pot Chili!

How to make

All made in one bowl and no chopping required, this beef chili recipe really could not be easier.

  1. Cook and crumble the ground beef in a large stockpot, then drain off the fat.
  2. Stir in beans, soup, water, brown sugar, chili powder, and salt, simmer until hot and thickened, then serve with your favorite toppings!
Pro tip
Make a double or triple batch! This chili gets even better as the flavors meld together in the fridge, so it’s perfect for meal prep lunches!

How long does it take to cook?

This chili takes 15 minutes to cook on the stovetop. With about 5 minutes of prep, this easy chili recipe takes just 20 minutes to make from start to finish.

So quick, so easy, and so yummy!

What do you top chili with?

Toppings take your chili from great to amazing! Here are some of my favorites:

  • Something Cheesy. I love shredded sharp cheddar for flavor and creaminess, but any cheese will do . . . pepperjack anyone?
  • Something Creamy. Sour cream or greek yogurt cut the richness of the chili with a creamy tang!
  • Something Salty and Crunchy. Tortilla chips, fritos, or crackers will add a salty flavor and crunchy texture!
  • Something fresh. Jalapeño slices, cilantro, avocado, or black olives balance out the rich chili with fresh flavors!

How to season chili

This particular recipe uses salt and chili powder for seasoning, but if you’d like to amp it up a bit, try adding in additional flavors and spices such as liquid smoke, worcestershire sauce, pepper, ground cumin, smoked paprika, and/or red pepper flakes!

How do you thicken homemade chili?

If your chili is thinner than you’d like, try simmering the chili a bit longer (uncovered). If it still isn’t thick enough, try whisking in a cornstarch or flour slurry. You could also bulk it up with more (drained) beans.

Pro tip
Make a cornstarch/flour slurry by simply mixing together 1 tablespoon of cold water and 1 tablespoon of cornstarch/flour.

How do you thin homemade chili?

If your chili ends up thicker than you like, try stirring in broth or water. Add small amounts at a time so it doesn’t become too thin. Taste and re-season, as necessary.

Variations

  • Spice it up. Try adding green chiles, diced jalapeño, a little hot sauce, a sprinkle of red pepper flakes, or cayenne pepper.
  • Use a different meat. Try it with ground chicken or turkey instead. Check out this turkey and vegetable chili recipe! You could even throw in some bacon.
  • Make it vegetarian or vegan. Check out my crockpot vegetarian chili recipe or my instant pot vegetarian chili.
  • Make it Tex-Mex. Swap the pinto beans for black beans and toss in a little bit of taco seasoning.
  • Add more veggies. Try it with zucchini, bell pepper, corn, carrots, onions, or even sweet potato!

What to serve with chili?

Chili is packed with delicious and filling ingredients but I LOVE to serve it up with some yummy sides as well:

Bowl of beef chili held one hand

How to store

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 4-5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

To reheat, thaw in the fridge, if frozen, then heat on the stovetop or in the microwave until warm.

How to season tacos

You can season your taco meat using store-bought taco seasoning or my homemade taco seasoning—which only takes a few minutes to make! Homemade taco seasoning is made up of chili powder, cumin, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, and dried oregano.

What meat to use

Ground beef is classic for tacos but feel free to use ground turkey or chicken instead if preferred. If you’re using ground beef, make sure it’s lean-ish (anywhere from 80/20 to 90/10) so the taco meat isn’t too oily.

Other ways to use taco meat

Tacos aren’t your thing? No worries! You can use this ground beef taco meat in a number of different ways.

  • Burrito Bowls. Serve it over rice with beans, corn salsa, pico, lettuce, etc.
  • Taco Pizza. Use it in my taco pizza recipe.
  • Taquitos. Follow my air fryer chicken taquitos recipe but use ground beef instead of chicken!

Alphabet soup brings me back to my childhood. Who’s with me? This homemade version is about 1,000,000 times better than the canned variety, but have no fear, because it’s *almost* as easy as cracking open a can of soup. 😉

Ingredients

This hearty, yet healthy soup is absolutely PACKED with good for you veggies and spices.

  • Ground Beef – use 80/20 so the meat is tender but not overly greasy.
  • Yellow Onion, Carrot, and Celery – the classic “mirepoix” veggie trio used in soup to add flavor, color, nutrients, and texture.
  • Garlic – adds a subtle nutty kick of flavor.
  • Italian Seasoning, Salt, and Pepper – a simple blend of seasonings that adds so much sweet, earthy flavor.
  • Beef Broth and Tomato Juice – a flavorful and slightly sweet base.
  • Russet Potato – a great way to bulk up any soup! Peeled and cubed for a yummy fluffy texture.
  • Green Beans and Corn – use frozen green beans and corn for easy prep and perfectly tender textures.
  • Alphabet Pasta – no need to cook first since the pasta cooks directly in the soup!
  • Parmesan Cheese – melted into the soup for a much needed sharp, nutty, salty flavor.
  • Sour Cream and Monterey-Jack Cheese – highly recommended for serving!

Pro tip
Don’t skip the toppings! The sour cream adds a tangy creaminess and the monterey-jack adds a great gooey texture and mild, buttery flavor.

How to make

This alphabet soup recipe might not be quite as quick as the canned variety but it’s SO MUCH healthier and still only takes 20 minutes to prep!

  1. Heat a large stockpot over medium heat then add in beef, onion, carrot, celery, garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Cook until the beef is no longer pink and the carrots are tender.beef and veggies in stockpot
  2. Stir in broth, tomato juice, and potato then bring to a simmer, cover, lower the heat to keep it at a simmer and simmer for 8 minutes.broth and tomato juice added to stockpot
  3. Add in frozen green beans, corn, and pasta then raise the heat and bring the soup to a boil until the pasta is cooked to your liking.pasta and frozen veggies added to soup
  4. Stir in parmesan then serve and enjoy!finished alphabet soup being scooped with ladle

Pro tip
This recipe makes enough to feed an army. Serve it with biscuits and your favorite salad to stretch the servings even further!

Where can you buy alphabet pasta?

Alphabet shaped pasta can be found in a lot of major grocery stores, but I find it easiest to order it in bulk from Amazon!

Pro tip
If you really can’t find any alphabet shaped pasta or you don’t feel like taking the time to look for/order it, feel free to use any small shaped pasta!

Tips

Here are a few ways to keep this soup quick, easy, and delicious!

  • Use a lean-ish ground beef. Use 80/20 lean ground beef which is tender but not too greasy. If you use a fattier beef you will probably want to drain any excess grease after you cook it.
  • Use frozen veggies. You can use fresh green beans and corn or even canned varieties, but I prefer to use frozen since there’s no prep involved AND they still taste fresh.
  • Season to taste. I started with 1 teaspoon of salt but then ended up adding quite a bit more. Make sure you taste and re-season so the soup is just right for you!

Variations

I love this alphabet soup as is but it’s also super customizable if you want to switch things up.

  • Add more veggies. Pretty much anything goes! Try sweet potato, bell peppers, peas, spinach, zucchini, mushrooms, etc. Keep in mind the firmer veggies need to be added first while the softer veggies can be added later.
  • Use another protein. If ground beef isn’t your thing, use tofu, chickpeas, shredded chicken, Italian sausage, or ground turkey.
  • Use other pasta. Any small pasta shape will work.
  • Spice it up. If you prefer a kick of heat, try sprinkling in red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper.

bowl of alphabet soup above

What to serve with alphabet soup

Serve alphabet soup with a sprinkle of parmesan, a handful of monterey-jack, and a dollop of sour cream. Since this soup is already loaded with protein, carbs, and veggies, it’s a pretty balanced meal on its own but I do love to bulk it up with some bread and/or a salad.

How to store

Leftovers will last in an airtight container in the fridge for 4-5 days or in the freezer for 3-4 months.

To reheat, thaw in the fridge if frozen then microwave or warm on the stove until heated through. Thin with broth, as necessary, if the pasta soaks up too much liquid.

This Braised Beef is the epitome of comfort food. Slowly cooked beef is perfectly caramelized on the outside, then baked until fall apart tender in a mouthwatering sauce.

plated slow cooked beef on top of mashed potatoes

Why you’ll love braised beef

  • Flavorful. Slow cooking beef in spices, red, and broth creates incredibly rich flavors.
  • Tender. Cook the beef slow and slow makes the meat melt-in-your-mouth tender.
  • One pot wonder. A Dutch oven, is safe to use on the stove AND in the oven! Less dishes is always a win in my book.
  • Versatile. Serve this beef with your favorite sides such as mashed potatoes, pasta, vegetables, rice, bread, and/or salad.

What is braising?

Braising is a cooking method that utilizes dry and wet heat. Meat is first seared on the stove to create a caramelized crust on the outside, then will finish cooking low and slow in the oven in liquid of choice such as wine and broth.

Ingredients

  • Spices: Paprika, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Parsley, Salt, Pepper, and Celery Seed – this simple seasoning blend makes for a very rich and hearty flavor. Feel free to add more or less of each of the spices to suit your personal preference.
  • Beef – you’ll need 1 (3 pound) boneless chuck roast. This cut of meat is a great for braising, because it becomes very tender during the low and slow cooking process.
  • Oil – we used extra virgin olive oil, because that’s what we always have on hand, but feel free to use any oil such as avocado oil, canola oil, etc.
  • Yellow Onion – adds a sweet flavor and becomes tender and caramelized while cooking.
  • Red Wine and Beef Broth – our braising liquids! Use a red wine that you enjoy the flavor of.
  • Worcestershire Sauce – adds a little tang to balance out the richness of the broth.
  • Red Wine Vinegar – stirred into the sauce after cooking. This helps brighten the sauce to prevent it from becoming too rich.

How to make

  1. Season. Whisk together the spices, then coat the beef chunks.
  2. Sear. Heat oil in a Dutch oven, sear the beef chunks, then cook the onions.
  3. Braise. Deglaze with red wine, broth and Worcestershire sauce, then cook in the oven until the beef is tender.
  4. Serve. Stir in red wine vinegar, taste and re-season, then serve with your favorite sides.

Variations

  • Make it herby. Try adding in fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme for extra coziness.
  • Add veggies. Mushrooms, carrots, and/or potatoes would be great additions to bulk this up. You’ll need to add additional seasonings to keep this flavorful.
  • Spice it up. Add some heat by sprinkling in red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper.

Can i use a different cut of meat?

Chuck roast will give you the best results while also being affordable, but brisket or round roast may also be used.

Can i make it without wine?

Yes, replace the wine with beef broth (you may need to add additional red wine vinegar at the end to keep the sauce from being too rich), red grape juice, or even a nonalcoholic red wine will work.

Can i make braised beef without a dutch oven?

Yes! Sear the beef and onions in a skillet, deglaze with the wine, then transfer to an oven safe dish with the remaining ingredients. Cover (with a lid or even tin foil) and cook as directed.

Can i make this recipe in a slow cooker?

Yes! Check out my crockpot pot roast recipe if you’d like to make this in the slow cooker.

What to serve with braised beef

Serve braised beef with a carb such as potatoes, rice, or pasta to soak up that delicious sauce! I also love serving with bread for mopping and vegetables and/or a salad to lighten it up.

How to store

Leftovers will last in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

  • Provolone Cheese  – a mild cheese that pairs beautifully with the other flavors of the dish. Feel free to use another cheese such as swiss, mozzarella, or fontina. Whatever you choose, you’ll need 1 (8 oz) package sliced cheese.
  • Roast Beef – have it sliced fresh from the deli counter at the grocery store for the best results. Ask for 1 pound thinly sliced. If you’re looking for a more budget friendly option, opt for packaged roast beef. Feel free to use another deli meat, if desired.
  • Pepperoncini Peppers  – subtly spicy with a great tang! If you want more spice, try jalapeños instead.
  • Butter Sauce – a combination of unsalted butter and a packet of dry Italian salad dressing. This simple duo adds a flavor punch that makes these sliders extra delicious.

chips on a plate with roast beef italian slider

How to make

  1. Slice the Hawaiian rolls, layer the meat, cheese, and peppers, then spoon the butter sauce over the top.
  2. Bake in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish at 350 degrees F until the cheese is melty and the beef is hot, then slice, serve, and devour.

How to make in advance

Assemble the sliders as directed, but don’t make or apply the butter sauce. Cover the baking dish tightly with saran wrap then place in the fridge. When ready, remove the saran wrap, mix together and pour on the sauce. Bake, adding additional time, if necessary, then serve and enjoy.

Variations

  • Try a different type of bread. Dinner rolls, brioche buns, or ciabatta rolls could all be a great option.
  • Layer on other cheeses. Anything that melts well should work! Mozzarella, fontina, gouda, havarti, monterey jack, or pepperjack are some ideas.
  • Use another meat. Swap roast beef for sliced turkey, ham, or chicken.
  • Add more veggies. Caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, cooked bell peppers would all make a great addition to these sandwiches.
  • Spice up the butter sauce. Throw in minced garlic, fresh herbs, parmesan cheese, or even some red pepper flakes to mix it up.

Tips

  • Don’t separate the rolls before baking, this helps keep them soft.
  • If you’re serving this to kids, remove the seeds from the pepperoncini peppers for a milder flavor.
  • Too dry? Serve these next to a dipping sauce of au jus, marinara, ranch, etc.

plate with slice of cheeseburger pizza with fries held Sometimes ALL the comfort foods sound too good to pick just one. So why not combine two of them? Enter this cheeseburger pizza recipe! All your favorite cheeseburger ingredients piled onto a store-bought pizza crust.

Ingredients

  • Ground Beef – can’t have burger without beef! Use anything you have on hand. I like using a leaner variety so there’s less grease to drain.
  • Steak Seasoning – steak seasoning usually includes paprika, salt, pepper, garlic powder. This flavors the beef to give it a real “burger” flavor.
  • Pizza Dough – I use a pre-made pizza dough ball, but feel free to whip up your favorite homemade version instead!
  • Fry Sauce – our “pizza” sauce. Whip up a batch of my homemade fry sauce for a spicy, tangy, and creamy base.
  • Shredded Mozzarella and Cheddar Cheese –  the perfect melty, cheesy pairing. The mozzarella is what’s most commonly found on pizza and you can’t beat sharp cheddar on a great burger!
  • Pickles, Onion, Lettuce, and Tomato – classic burger toppings.

Pro tip
If your grocery store makes take and bake pizzas, they probably sell their own pre-made pizza dough as well! Mine is located near the deli and pre-made salad counter!

How to make

This cheeseburger pizza recipe takes a total of 30 minutes from start to finish!

  1. Heat a large non-skillet over medium heat, add in ground beef and steak seasoning, then cook until the beef is no longer pink. Drain the grease and set aside.
  2. Roll out the pizza dough and spread on fry sauce.
  3. Top with cooked beef, then onions.
  4. Sprinkle evenly with both cheeses and bake on preheated pizza stones in preheated oven until the cheese has melted.
  5. Remove from the oven, top with pickles, lettuce, and tomato, then serve and enjoy!

Pro tip
I LOVE the raw onion taste and texture on this pizza, but if raw onion isn’t your thing, feel free to cook the onions with the beef.

What kind of sauce is on cheeseburger pizza?

The classic cheeseburger pizza sauce is fry sauce—a ketchup and mayo-based condiment with a sweet, spicy, and tangy twist. You can buy it at some stores, but I love my homemade fry sauce recipe! whole cheeseburger pizza on baking sheet

Variations

  • Use a different sauce. Try BBQ sauce, honey mustard, or chick-fil-a sauce!
  • Try other toppings. Any burger toppings will work! Mushrooms, avocado, bacon, caramelized onions, blue cheese crumbles, etc.
  • Use another cheese. Try pepperjack for a spicy twist or gouda for a rich, nutty flavor. Anything goes!
  • Spice it up. Heat things up with a sprinkle of red pepper flakes or a drizzle of hot sauce.
  • Make it vegetarian. Use a meatless “beef” variety.

steak sandwich on a plate with french fries What’s not to love about this steak sandwich? Insanely flavorful and tender beef, a homemade herb butter, crispy, yet soft bread, and sweet caramelized onions…YES please!

Ingredients

There are three parts to this sandwich: the steak, the onions, and the fixin’s.

Steak

  • Oil – used in both the marinade and to sear the steak. Oil is used in the marinade to add moisture to the steak and is also heated up in a pan to create a steak that’s crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle. Because we’re cooking the meat at a relatively high temperature, look for an oil with a higher smoke point such as canola, safflower, peanut, or sunflower oil.
  • Vinegar – used in the marinade to tenderize the meat. This results in an ultra juicy steak, because it helps to break down the tissues. Apple cider vinegar is called for in the original recipe, but red wine vinegar, white wine vinegar, or something similar may be used as a replacement.
  • Seasonings: Garlic, Salt and Pepper – a simple seasoning blend that adds tons of flavor without overpowering the flavor of the beef. Use 1 tablespoon jarred minced garlic or about 4 cloves freshly minced. Exact measurements for salt and pepper are given, but feel free to season to taste.
  • Steak – boneless ribeye is a slightly pricier cut of steak, but the rich flavor and juicy texture can’t be beat. See “What cut of meat is used for a steak sandwich?” for other options.

Onions

  • Butter – used to caramelize the onions, butter adds a rich flavor and promotes a nice brown color. Unsalted or salted butter will work fine. Oil may also be used, but the flavor won’t be as rich.
  • Onion – yellow onions are called for in the original recipe, but red or white onions may be substituted. The onions can cook for as long or short as you’d like. Cook them shorter if you like a little crispy crunch or cook them longer to remove the “bite”. The choice is yours!
  • Seasonings: Salt and Pepper – again, keeping the seasonings simple allows the flavor of the onion to really shine!

Steak Sandwich

  • Bread – 1 (12 oz) package of ciabatta rolls (4 rolls) is used to make these sandwiches, but use whatever bread you’d like. See “What Bread to Use” for other suggestions.
  • Herb Butter – takes this steak sandwich to another level! This simple homemade spread is made with softened butter, fresh herbs, garlic, a touch of cheese, salt, and pepper. Don’t have time to make your own? Many grocery stores now carry flavored butters!
  • Cheese – optional, but highly recommended. Havarti provides a mild flavor and ultra creamy texture that compliments the steak beautifully. Any cheese that melts well should be absolutely tasty!
  • Arugula – optional, but adds a fresh, peppery flavor and slight crunch. Be sure to add the arugula AFTER broiling the sandwich so the color and crunch remain.

Pro tip
Don’t want herb butter? Try any of our aioli recipes instead!

How to make

Sear steak, caramelize onions, assemble, broil, and enjoy!

Steak

  1. Place oil, vinegar, garlic, salt, and pepper into a gallon sized ziplock baggie, mix until combined, then add in steak. Let marinate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a sauté pan, then sear steak for 3-5 minutes per side or until the internal temperature reaches 135 degrees F.
  3. Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing.

Onions

  1. Melt butter in a non-stick skillet over medium heat, then add in yellow onion and season with salt and pepper, to taste.
  2. Cook, stirring regularly, until the onions are cooked to your liking, about 5-10 minutes.

Steak Sandwich

  1. Spread bread with herb butter, then top with the steak, onions, and cheese.
  2. Broil in the oven until cheese is bubbly and melted.
  3. Top with arugula, if desired, and enjoy!

Pro tip
135 degrees F will give you a medium rare steak. If you like a more cooked steak, I’d recommend following the cooking directions from my Philly Cheesesteak Recipe, which slices the steak before cooking. This allows the steak is cook more thoroughly.

What cut of meat is used for a steak sandwich?

Boneless ribeye steak is a great meat for searing, which is how the steak is prepared for this steak sandwich. It’s flavorful, juicy, and tender, but it is also one of the pricier cuts of beef. New York strip or sirloin tip steak (the most affordable option) would be fine substitutions.

What bread to use

Ciabatta rolls are used to make these steak sandwiches, but any bread you enjoy would be fine. Sliced baguette, french bread, or sourdough would be my top substitutions for the ciabatta rolls, because they’re all relatively hearty and will hold up well next to the juicy steak.

How do you tenderize a sandwich steak?

Here are five ways to ensure your steak is ultra tender and juicy:

  • Steak: use a more expensive cut of beef (ribeye). Cuts like ribeye come from muscles that don’t get much exercise, which is why they’re so tender.
  • Marinade: the vinegar in the marinade breaks down the beef allowing it to become ultra tender. If time allows, the steak should marinate for 8 hours in the fridge.
  • Cooking: searing the steak at a high temperature for a short period of time will result in steak that’s crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle. Cooking the steak to medium-rare (about 135 degrees F) is perfect for ensuring the beef is tender. Overcooking the steak will result in a dry, chewy meat.
  • Resting: resting the steak before cutting allows the juices to remain inside the steak.
  • Slicing: cutting against the grain shortens the long, tough meat fibers which makes the meat more tender!

What to serve with a steak sandwich

Here are some dishes that would also be super yummy alongside this classic sandwich:

smash burger on plate with fries Trevor LOVES burgers. Me? Not so much. Until, that is, we started making smash burgers at home. Oh my GOSH, you guys, I am officially a burger lover. Thin meat patties that are ultra juicy, absolutely packed with flavor and loaded with all your favorite burger toppings — extra cheese please — YUM!

What are smash burgers?

Smash burgers are burger patties that have been smashed. It’s a technique used for cooking burgers that results in juicier, more flavorful, more crisp burger patties. When the meat hits the hot skillet, it immediately begins to brown, resulting in a more caramelized flavor. When the meat is smashed into patties on the hot skillet, the moisture and flavor are locked in rather than dripping out as it would in regular burgers. Smash burgers are popular because they cook really fast, are juicier than other burgers, and have delicious, crispy edges from cooking at high heat!

Ingredients

This smash burger recipe is made with ingredients you probably already have on hand!

  • Ground Beef – use 80/20 for best results. This results in a juicy burger that’s not too dry, but also not too fatty.
  • Worcestershire Sauce, Soy Sauce, and Fish Sauce – the seasoning trifecta for these smash burgers! The salty, tangy, umami flavor each of these brings in key to having super flavorful meat.
  • Salt and Pepper – brings out flavors and adds a bit of spice.
  • Unsalted Butter – used to cook the beef while adding a rich, buttery flavor to the meat.
  • Cheddar Cheese, Buns, Fry Sauce, Pickles, and Onions – for serving!

Pro tip
Don’t knock the fish sauce before you try it. It adds an amazing umami, earthy, savory flavor that can’t be replaced!

How to make

The key is to have everything on hand so you can assemble the burgers when the patties are hot and fresh off the pan!

  1. In a large bowl, add beef, worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, fish sauce, salt, and pepper. Use your hands to mix until it’s just combined. You don’t want to overwork the beef.
  2. Divide it into 4 equal portions but don’t flatten yet.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium high heat, then add in 1 tablespoon butter.
  4. Let the butter melt then add in 2 of the patties and smash flat with a spatula until they’re about 1/2 inch thick. Cook for 2 minutes then flip and cook for another 2 minutes
  5. In the last 30 seconds of cook time, top each patty with a slice of cheese and cover with a lid to melt.
  6. Remove the patties and repeat with the other two then assemble your burgers as desired and enjoy!

Pro tip
Because these burgers are so quick and easy, they’re great for parties! This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled.

What beef to use

Use 80/20 ground chunk to keep these budget friendly and perfectly juicy. You need enough fat content to keep these smash burgers tender, but not too much so they’re swimming in grease.

What to serve with smash burgers

Serve these smash burgers with any of your favorite sides! Here are some of mine:

How to store

holding a steak taco

It’s no secret that Trevor and I love going out for Friday Night Mexican Night! Since having kids, however, that’s become more of a challenge. Our solution? Homemade steak tacos! These are seriously so delicious, but don’t be intimidated, because they’re also seriously so easy!

Ingredients

  • Marinade: Orange Juice, Lime Juice, Lemon Juice, Honey – the combination of orange, lime, and lemon juice not only flavor the steak, they also help break the steak down to ensure it’s ultra tender. Fresh or bottled may be used. The honey provides a sweetness to balance out the brightness from the juices. Any sweetener such as sugar, agave, or maple syrup should be just fine.
  • Seasoning: Salt, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Cumin, Chili Powder, Pepper – this simple, homemade seasoning blend adds so much flavor to the steak without overpowering it. Feel free to use your favorite combination of spices or use a pre-made blend such as your favorite taco seasoning!
  • Steak – flank steak is used in the original recipe, because it’s flavorful, versatile, and relatively affordable. It can, however, end up tough if not cooked or sliced correctly, so be sure look at our How to Cook and How to Cut for best practices.

Best steak for tacos

Skirt steak and flank steak are most commonly used for tacos, because they have good flavor, are easy to cook, and are cost effective! Because both of these cuts of beef are pretty lean, it’s important to not overcook and to slice against the grain (more on both below).

How to season steak for tacos

Today we’re using a simple combination of salt, onion powder, garlic powder, cumin, chili powder, and pepper. These spices add a ton of flavor without overpowering the taste of the beef. You could keep the seasonings even more simple with just salt and pepper, make them spicy by adding cayenne, or take a short-cut and use your favorite packet of store-bought taco seasoning!

How to make

  1. Place steak into a gallon sized baggie with orange juice, lime juice, lemon juice, and honey, then allow to marinate in the fridge.
  2. Discard marinade, then rub both sides of the steak with salt, onion powder, garlic powder, cumin, chili powder, and black better.
  3. Cook on the stove, in the oven, or on the grill until the desired internal temperature has been reached.
  4. Rest, slice, then serve with your favorite taco fixins!

How to cook

On the stove

  1. Place steak in hot, oiled pan, cover, sear for 2 to 3 minutes until well browned, then flip and sear, covered, for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until steak is cooked to your liking.
  2. Cover with foil and allow to rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.

In the oven

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F, then place steak onto a silicone mat lined baking sheet.
  2. Bake in preheated oven for 10-20 minutes, or until the steak is done to your liking.
  3. Cover with foil and allow to rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.

On the grill

  1. Preheat grill to 400 degrees F then grill steak for 7-9 minutes per side or until steak is cooked to your liking, flipping once.
  2. Cover with foil and allow to rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving

What temperature should steak be?

Everybody has an opinion on what temperature the perfect steak is:

  • Rare: 125 degrees F
  • Medium-rare: 135 degrees F
  • Medium: 145 degrees F
  • Medium-well: 150 degrees F
Pro tip
I highly recommend investing in a [smty_affil id="38217"]meat thermometer[/smty_affil] for perfectly cooked steak every time!

How to cut steak for tacos

After the steak has been cooked to the desired temperature, allow it to rest for 5-10 minutes so the fibers in the meat have a chance to relax and the juices redistribute aka what makes the steak moist and flavorful.

Now, it’s time to cut. Simply use a sharp knife to cut across the grain of the steak (cut perpendicularly to the lines). Cutting against the grain means the muscle fibers will be shorter, which means the steak will be less chewy and more tender.

How to serve

These steak tacos can be served in any tortilla you’d liked topped with a variety of fixings!

Pro tip
Don’t forget the side of chips, rice, and beans!

How to store

Leftover steak can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. I don’t recommend freezing the leftovers, since it’s already been sliced and you’ll run the risk of the steak drying out.

These cheeseburger sliders have all my favorite smash burger flavors, but are way easier to make and bonus: there’s enough to feed a crowd! I am completely obsessed with these!

Ingredients

All your favorite cheeseburger flavors stuffed into fluffy, sweet, slider rolls. YUM!

Cheeseburger Filling

  • Ground Beef – the base for our burger filling. Use any variety you’d like (80/20, 90/10, etc.), but we like 80/20 to prevent these sliders from becoming dry.
  • Worcestershire Sauce, Soy Sauce, Fish Sauce –  the seasoning trifecta for these sliders! The salty, tangy, umami flavor each of these brings in key to having super flavorful meat. I use these in all my cheeseburger or cheeseburger inspired recipes and it adds such an incredible depth of flavor.
  • Spices: Salt, Pepper, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder – our very simple seasoning blend that adds an incredible amount of flavor to the beef.
  • Onion – yellow onion is used in the recipe, but feel free to use white or red onion. Yellow and red onions will yield a sweeter flavor whereas white onion will have more of a “bite” to it. The onion is kept raw to provide a sharper flavor and crunchy texture.
  • Dill Pickles – a classic cheeseburger topping that provide a briny, sweet flavor and subtle crunch. You can omit if you really don’t like pickles, but you’ll definitely be missing out on that amazing flavor and texture.
  • Mayonnaise, Mustard, and Ketchup – provide that classic cheeseburger flavor and additional moisture to the filling.

Cheeseburger Sliders

  • Hawaiian Rolls – the classic slider bread! I love the fluffy texture and sweet, buttery flavor of Hawaiian rolls but traditional slider buns can be used if preferred.
  • Cheese – we stuck with the classics: classic American and cheddar, but feel free to use YOUR favorite cheeseburger cheese: havarti, pepper-jack, gouda, etc.
  • Butter – melted, then spooned over the bread to add a rich, buttery flavor and slightly crispy exterior.
  • Sesame Seeds – used as a garnish to make these look like your classic fast-food hamburger! Feel free to omit if you don’t have any on hand.
Pro tip
If raw onions aren’t your thing, simply add them in before sautéing the beef so they soften and cook.

How to make

Cheeseburger Filling

  1. Cook beef, worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, fish sauce, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder in a large non-stick skillet over medium heat, then stir in onions, pickles, mayo, mustard, and ketchup.

Cheeseburger Sliders

  1. Slice the group of 12 rolls in half horizontally so that you have one “slab” of tops and one “slab” of bottoms. (Do not pull the rolls apart.)
  2. Assemble the sandwiches: place the bottom “slab” into a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, top with American cheese, filling, cheddar cheese, then the top rolls.
  3. Spoon melted butter evenly over the rolls, sprinkle with sesame seeds, then bake at 350 degrees F until the meat is hot and the cheese has melted.
  4. Cut into individual sandwiches, serve, and enjoy!
Pro tip
Secure the top buns with toothpicks if they are sliding off the filling.

Variations

  • Use a different bread. Try hamburger slider buns instead of Hawaiian rolls for a more traditional burger flavor.
  • Try another cheese. Blue, gruyere, monterey-jack, whatever you’d like!
  • Add bacon. Cook up some of my oven bacon until crispy, then use it to top the filling.
  • Serve with additional fixin’s. Top sliders with shredded lettuce, sliced tomato, or whatever other burger toppings you enjoy!

What to serve with cheeseburger sliders

What’s more classic than burger and fries?!

How to store

Leftover sliders will last in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days or in the freezer for 2-3 months.

To enjoy again, thaw in the fridge, if frozen, then warm in the microwave or bake wrapped in foil at 350ºF until heated through.

burger slider on a plate with fries

Can I make these ahead?

Yes! This is a great freezer friendly recipe:

  1. Make as directed, cool completely, slice into individual sliders, then wrap each slider in tin foil.
  2. Place sliders into a freezer safe ziplock baggie, then store in the freezer for 2-3 months.
  3. When ready to serve: thaw in the fridge overnight, preheat oven to 350 degrees F, place the desired amount of foil wrapped sliders onto a baking sheet, then bake until heated through.
Pro tip
You can chose to bake or not bake these before freezing. It doesn’t matter. We always bake, so we can enjoy a few sliders before freezing the rest!
